Electric Miles Directions was formed with the idea of presenting, in a big band key, a significant selection of highlights from the Davis electric period, which began with the defining moment of In A Silent Way (1968), and lasted right to the end of Miles career, although the most recent piece included here is the 1986 Tutu. When, in 1968-69, In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew were released, they marked a turning point, proving that even top jazz musicians were sensitive to the most genuine and original nuances of the new phenomenon called rock: a language that was actually very varied and filled with creative innovation, but above all was able to expand at planetary level with its unique comprehensive, multi-racial drive and ability to convey alternative content from a political and social point of view.
What has really been put together here is a sampler of more than two decades of career, during which the great St.Louis trumpet player changed sound and poetical-musical intent several times, although he never abandoned a fundamentally rhythmic style with great impact. He continued to evolve by working with several brilliant partners, and thanks to the crucial contribution of excellent soloists who played in his group. One of these musician was the extraordinary PMJO guest, who kindled the enthusiasm of the Auditorium audience. The great Boston guitarist Mike Stern, who actually partnered the trumpet player from 1980 to 1983, and was a frontline figure on important albums like The Man With The Horn, We Want Miles, Star People, and who showed a true enthusiasm about this project from the very beginning, magically pulled all the PMJO musicians on their wake. Mike’s throbbing and ever-present vibe takes listeners by surprise, an carry them right to the core of a superb show.
"The conception and development of this project was a heartfelt issue, being a tribute to music that was one of the main references, musically and emotionally, for musicians of my generation. The starting idea was to provide the big band with new arrangements of a music originally conceived for a different line-up. But at the same time, we wanted to communicate to today’s listener the aims and memories of a music that found its meaning in collective energy, orgiastic moods, boundless creativity, improvisation, the hypnotic and driving passion, and whose execution, at that time, required simply those few gestures that immortalized Miles as the greatest “director” in the jazz scene. A musical genre and an era that I am inordinately fond of but, then again, judging from the response of the people sitting in the Auditorium on that April evening in 2006, I am in excellent company" (M.G.)

The Man With The Horn, We Want Miles, Star People.
